Uniting to combat neglected tropical diseases

Mundo Sano is the only Latin American organization that is part of Uniting to combat NTDs, an international coalition created to reduce the impact of a series of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). It was launched in 2012 in London, aimed at making key progress in the fight against ten of these diseases.

This coalition promotes drug donations, the design of low-cost large-scale plans to guarantee access to treatments, further research efforts, and the development of new diagnosis and treatment tools.

The 10 diseases that are part of the London Declaration are as follows: dracunculiasis, Chagas disease, soil-transmitted helminths, leishmaniasis, lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, sleeping sickness, leprosy, schistosomiasis and onchocerciasis.

Apart from Mundo Sano, the initiative is formed by non-governmental organizations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Drugs for Neglected Diseases iniciative (DNDi), the Lions Clubs International Foundation, The Children’s Investment Found Foundation, the 13 major pharmaceuticals, World Bank, the UK and US governments (through their UKaid and USAID agencies) and the governments of the countries affected.
