ENDEMIC AREA
Puerto Iguazú is a border city that is located in the northern area of the province of Misiones, and that connects Ciudad del Este (Paraguay) and Foz do Iguaçu (Brasil). It is surrounded by the Paraná and Iguazú rivers, and is at a 297 Km (136 miles) distance from Posadas, the capital city of the province.
In February 2004, and in view of the good results obtained in Clorinda, a program against dengue fever virus also began in Puerto Iguazú, since the population in this region is also at high risk of exposure to this disease. Through this operation center, local action measures similar to those displayed at Clorinda's operation center were taken, within the framework of a cooperation agreement signed between the National Ministry of Health and Environment and Mundo Sano.
In 2006, a new action measure related to leishmaniasis (a vector-borne disease transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies) was also initiated. The first stage of this action measure is focused on the risk distribution and tegumentary leishmaniasis vector surveillance.
These new projects are being carried out thanks to the continued support of the National Ministry of Health and Environment and the municipal government of Puerto Iguazú, with whom we work synergically.
