ENDEMIC AREA
Clorinda city is located in the Province of Formosa, close to the border of Argentina and Paraguay, on the Pilcomayo river bank, at 115 kilometers (73 miles) north from the provincial capital city of Formosa.
With the purpose of reducing reported emergence of dengue cases in the city and its area of influence, the Foundation opened its operation center in Clorinda in 2003, where the presence of the disease vector (Aedes aegypti mosquito) and the virus circulation of at least two serotypes were determined. Clorinda's location at the short distance of 40 Km (25 miles) from Asunción city, capital of Paraguay, makes it a high risk geographical area of exposure to the dengue fever virus.
The strategy for reducing vector mosquito population, Aedes aegypti, is based on a joint action involving the participation of national, provincial and municipal institutions, within the framework of an agreement signed with the National Ministry of Health and Environment. It is thus oriented towards the promotion of social action leading to adopt good practices in preventive health measures and dengue control at the community level.
